Masai Mara Hosted Safaris

Masai Mara Hosted Safaris (7 nights)

3rd – 11th November – 6 places

These hosted safaris are based at the Zebra Plains Mara Camp in permanent tented accommodation, where we have negotiated a discounted rate. Your contract will be direct with Zebra Plains, but we will handle all of the administration on your behalf. During the safari we will be on hand to offer help, advice and to host you during your stay.

Guests will have access to a dedicated safari vehicle and guide, suitable for the use of wildlife enthusiasts or photographers. Photographers will have a whole row of seats to themselves allowing shots from either side of the vehicle. For 2024, vehicle occupancy will be on the basis of 2 people in 1 car, but groups of 3 or 4 people wishing to share a vehicle can be accommodated. If a second vehicle is required, there will be an extra charge. Guests paying the single supplement rate will have private use of a game vehicle and guide.

You will have the option of all day game drives (12 hours) or the more usual morning drive / siesta / afternoon drive format, on a daily basis. Walking safaris in the Zebra Plains concession are also available.

    Hosted Safaris Itinerary

DAY 1 – On arrival at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be met by a Zebra Plains representative who will transfer you to a city hotel for an overnight stay on bed & breakfast terms.

DAY 2 – Following breakfast in your hotel, a Zebra Plains representative will meet you in Reception and transfer you to Nairobi Wilson airport for your flight to Ol Kiombo airstrip in the Maasai Mara.

There you will be met by your guide from the camp and your hosted safari begins. You will have time for a short game drive on your transfer to the camp in time for lunch. After lunch you can settle in to your room before taking high tea, prior to an afternoon game drive.

Should you prefer, you can remain in the camp and take sundowners prior to your evening dinner. During dinner, your guide will agree a plan with you for the following day.

DAYS 3 – 8 – You will receive an early morning wake up call at the time agreed with your guide, allowing time for tea or coffee in the dining room before departing on your game drive.

You are free to choose on a daily basis whether you wish to game drive for the whole day, or shorter drives with breaks spent in the camp. A picnic breakfast will be taken while out on the game drive, which you can choose to take at a time that suits you. If you choose to stay out all day, you will also have a picnic lunch served in the bush.

Guests opting for the separate game drives will return to the camp for lunch, before taking another game drive at a time agreed with your guide.
Arriving back at the camp from your game drives there will be time to take a welcome drink around the fire with other guests.

Ample time to discuss your sightings from the day and to make plans for your game driving the following day, before taking a well earned evening dinner.

DAY 9 – You will receive an early morning wake up call in time for breakfast at the camp after which you will have plenty of time to prepare for your transfer to Ol Kiombo for your morning flight to Nairobi Wilson airport. You can elect to have a final morning game drive and take the afternoon flight back to Nairobi Wilson, but this will incur park fees for an extra day at a cost of $200 per person.

Arriving at Nairobi Wilson, arrangements will be dependant upon the departure time of your international flight. We are able to arrange city tours, hotel accommodation and restaurant bookings on your behalf (at extra cost).

    A Great Holiday

I was referred to Ian and Rosemary by my father. He lived in Dorset until a few years ago and had the pleasure of meeting them at various photographer venues around Dorset and beyond. When I expressed an interest in a safari, he didn't hesitate to recommend them. He knew them as great photographers that were very passionate, pleasant and professional people. He made me aware that they arranged safaris and other trips too. I found that to be very much how they are. The trip to Masai Mara in November 2022 was very well planned in every detail. I thoroughly enjoyed each aspect of the journey from the hotel used in Nairobi, the light aircraft flights, the safari base and of course, the game drives themselves. The photo opportunities just kept presenting themselves. Safaris are not cheap but I do think I got good value for my money. Other companies can be more expensive but may not use the same standard of hotel or base camps and light aircraft transfers. In addition to those things, the vehicles used can hold up to 6 people whereas Ian and Rosemary arrange for you to have just one or two photographers per vehicle, giving you much more freedom to get the shots you want. I'm no stranger to photography but new to wildlife. I wanted to push myself with my 100-400 lens that I'd barely used. In the presence of much more experienced photographers I didn't feel uncomfortable and actually found, with a few tips and hints, it inspired me. I would say that it is such a pleasant and relaxed environment, that even much less experienced photographers will gain a lot from their company, as well as enjoy a great holiday.

My recent rescheduled trip due Covid restrictions trip to Amboseli and Masai Mara turned out to be fantastic! Perfectly organized I had some great encounters, including the mating of lions, resulting in beautiful images. The superb accommodation and the friendly service made this trip to be something unforgettable. A company and trip I would recommend to anyone who would like to do a safari.
